GULF STREAM AT DAWN

We are leaving for Florida at dawn tomorrow morning. We are anxious to be there already. The winds will be in our favour finally. We will go all the way to the Lake Worth entrance into the ICW and anchor there tomorrow night. We then wake early on Saturday morning as we want to be in Stuart, FL for about 1pm at low slack tide. This is an ideal time to dock our boat at D5 at Sunset Bay Marina. Parallel Parking is fun with a 45 ft catamaran hahahahah!

Today we walked the beach and collected more tiny shells and a few larger. I told Paul this is the last beach for a very long time. We also saw the Methodist Church here in Bimini. It is a quaint structure and you can tell it is well loved and maintained.

We will not have internet until Saturday afternoon.

STILL VERY WINDY HERE IN BIMINI

This is dredging going on. This backhoe moves backwards a
couple of yards, good-bye! Deep water just behind it.
They are constantly dredging the waters so a "path" is made
from the big water to Bimini Sands Resort and Marina.
We are still here in Bimini and still very windy, blowing over 22 mph! Did chores this morning, walked into the town to see more then came back to freshen up. Off we went to Bimini Bay Resort and Marina for lunch. Yesterday we took our dinghy to this resort to check it out. This is a very large resort BUT with the economy they are suffering. Not too many people staying there. The marinas were only 20% filled. There are two marinas and with a multi-million dollar facility it is too bad so many docks are empty. We docked our dinghy and spoke to the dockmaster, wandered around the small stores for awhile and asked about coming today for a lunch out. No problem, he said. So, now today, we left here at Big Game Club around 12noon and docked our dinghy once again. The pool restaurant was the one to go to, so a nice walk there and we had a wonderful meal. This restaurant was at the vanishing pool. Spectacular view!

Vanishing pool at Bimini Bay Resort, the pool is in the foreground.
 The Gulf Stream beyond.
This is not an all-inclusive resort. This is a pay as you go (or charge to your room). This resort offers, ownership, rentals and holiday packages. Paul and I have said if we come back to Bimini we will stay here for a few days too. It is wonderful!

This is the pool at Big Game Club
We like it here, small and reasonable
Such friendly people

How many boaters does it take to change a lightbulb? None, because the right size bulb isn't on board, the local marine-supply store doesn't carry that brand, and the mail-order house has them on back-order.

WILL BE "STRANDED" IN BIMINI

Yep, we will be here until probably Friday!! The weather out in the Gulf Stream is unbearable for our catamaran. So, we hang here at the Big Game Club Resort and Marina. It seems we have one last little holiday before arriving in Florida. We so do want to get home though. We will make the best of this. We do work on the boat in the mornings, ie: clean out the front hatches, mold growing there..... then have a lunch. We then walk into town to explore the small "stores". I know now from experience, when a tiny building says SuperMarket on it, don't get your hopes up. It is small with a few cans of stuff on the shelves. We did get some coconut bread at the bakery though, mmmmm ... better than the yellow house bakery in Staniel Cay. We sit and read around the pool in the afternoon..... very hard to take, but we are forced to, what else is there to do?? :-)

At the Big Game Club, Guy Harvey caught these in 1999.
We do have such high speed internet here that we listen to our news at home on the radio, the bad news of Ontario and then good music on our Majic100 Radio station. We are weening ourselves right into our civilization.

Next blog post, I will have some DID YOU KNOW.... things. I still want people to follow along, so I have to keep our lives interesting. Tomorrow we will walk to the Bimini Bay Resort, we can shop and eat a lunch at a restaurant there. This is a more expensive place to stay. Looks like they have a nice beach there. Walking and keeping in shape is important!!

The following is supposedly a documented conversation between the USS Lincoln and a Canadian "vessel"....
Canadian: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.
Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.
Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert your course.
Canadians: No, I say again you divert your course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that you change your course 15 degrees north, I say again, that's one five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

STILL IN BIMINI, BAHAMAS

We did venture out of Alice Town, Bimini this morning shortly after 7:30am.... but the seas were not favourable for us to continue. We were rocking back and forth. We made an executive decision to come back to the Big Game Club and tie up. We did this in January when we tried twice to leave Chub Cay to Nassau. We do not have an appointment or schedule, so we are hanging here until the weather turns more agreeable to us.

"When I forget how talented God is, I look to the Sea."

Big Game Club is a Angler's Paradise (Chub Cay also). This is a Guy Harvey Angler Resort (google him). This "resort" has a pool and restaurant so it is nice. If we have to wait out weather hmmmmmmm... a place with a pool sounds good. We did go out for lunch today and enjoyed Mahi Mahi... this fish is delice!

I finished my Lee Child novel so onto my Stuart Wood's novel... remember my posting of numbers?? Well I should have counted the novels on board that I brought and the novels I read. I want everyone to know I did not read nearly as much as I thought I would. I was ACTIVE!! I usually read at bedtime at home, but I believe I was so exhausted that I read only half the pages at bedtime.

It was Sunday today so our walk into town was a quiet one. We just wanted to get off boat and exercise. No stores open. We will walk again tomorrow and check out a few places here. ... this will be after we check weather and see if we are indeed leaving.

We went to a new island to us with Doug and Vicki. It was Hawksbill Cay. This island is so beautiful and isolated. I thought I saw all the "blues" there were to see, well I was wrong, Hawksbill Cay had even more shades of blue. The pictures just do not capture them. I just learned today that the Hawksbill Turtle is endangered ... we have learned so much this trip, visually, spiritually and emotionally!

HEADING TO LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA

Friday we left Atlantis. We said goodbye to a wonderful experience there. I saw the turtles, starfish and the beaches. Paul and I walked the resort for a good 1 hour to see parts we hadn't seen yet. I'm sure there are parts we still haven't seen.

I will upload pictures tonight. We were in Chub Cay last night and tonight we are in Bimini, this is a place with reliable internet.. and fast. I wish I had this kind of internet at home in small town Metcalfe. So please feel free to visit this specific posting for the next couple of days. I will upload pics for the next while tonight but will be "updated" after each picture. So in one or two hours there may be more pictures, just when you thought you saw the whole posting.

This is Doug and I having fun!
We did not eat ice cream, but we screamed with fun!

You know the internet is so good, that I am listening to Majic100 Ottawa..... the first time since Jan.!! I am slowly getting back to reality! I may need therapy to just adjust to "civilization" hahahahah!

Our son Ben and wife are now homeowners as of June 4th so we are excited for them! Time does not sit still in Bahamas. We are anxious to go home and celebrate with them and enjoy Easter with our family.

This is what we viewed from the cockpit of our catamaran,
what a sight! Especially at night all lit up! Atlantis Marina.

There are many yachts and wonderful tenders to the yachts that come
into Atlantis, but his boat was memorable as it stuck out like
a yellow banana! I had to take a picture. He dropped off people
that hired him from Atlantis.

Leaving Nassau and saw the Disney Cruise Line!
We know of a cruise ship, Norwegian Epic arriving when we were leaving
4500 passengers and 1700 crew! Yep!

I will upload more pictures once we hit Stuart, FL on Monday, so stay tuned.

JOURNEY IS ENDING SOON

I am sitting here in our salon drinking a glass of wine and viewing the Exumas through Doug and Vicki's eyes. We viewed the Exumas through Ben, wife, Sam and friends Jalyn and Tyler when we began our journey in Feb. Now we see the Exumas through Doug and Vicki at the very end of our journey. How time flies but not too fast that we do indeed see how beautiful everything God created with these blue waters. We ventured where we never dreamed we would when we were dreaming 20 years ago. We are blessed to have a catamaran to share our experiences with others. We had four weeks of guests and we are so happy to have them see everything through new eyes everytime.
We are sitting once again at the Atlantis Marina. We thought this would be a great end to our journey. Share this amazing aquarium with Doug and Vicki and go out for a nice dinner tonight. There is so much to see and do here. A great ending to our journey. We will venture to Chub Cay, Bimini and Florida to fly home for Easter.... this is the plan, but weather dictates to us, not a calendar.
We enjoyed Doug and Vicki's visit with seeing everything on the return. Norman's Cay must be our favourite as we did collect sand dollars again. (My mother from Vancouver Island visiting us in Ottawa in April wants some... as any daughter would do, I collected extra). The Boo Boo Hill at the Exuma Land and Sea Park is awesome and got some great pictures.
We are lighter in the water as the scotch, gin, vodka and wine is at a minimum and of course all the canned goods are disappearing. Mind you, the 9 cases of beer are down to a six-pack!!! We provisioned well and I hope I remembered where I did “hide” everything! We ate well the whole time we were here... and I did sure enjoy writing this blog. This is a diary of sorts, but I do know I had to make it PG 14 rating as many do read it now, Americans and Canadians and Germans too! I hope everyone got my sense of humour??
I will use the internet again as we travel to Florida BUT it may not happen until we actually get there. We will keep our catamaran in Stuart, FL, for April and May. We will then travel down end of May to Stuart to move our boat to St. Augustine, FL. This is where we keep it for the summer for hurricane season. It comes out of the water “on the hard”. We “summerize” it so we can leave it and come back in the Fall to work on it again. Mold is always an issue down here so we are investing in a solution to keep mold at bay, so who knows, keep you posted.

At Hawksbill Cay, just another sunny day

Shell collecting at Norman's Cay's beaches
Wednesday we had a 80 foot yacht anchor right beside us (literally) here at Rose Island, outside of Nassau. This yacht had about 20 .. 20 year olds and crew members. These younguns were sea dooing, boarding, etc. all around us. Anyone who knows Paul would know this is not a good idea. The poor German sailboat in front of this yacht must have been nervous. Paul called the yacht on the radio when they were “leaving” as they were so close we were nervous! Bigger does not necessarily mean better Captains. Paul has many stories, so if going out for lunch... make it a long one hahahahahah!

The man-made lagoon, Rose Island

Later on Wednesday we motored over to the lagoon. This man-made lagoon was created for the Sheraton Hotel years ago. They wanted to build a huge multi-million dollar resort, but times got hard. So the lagoon and a few excellent docks are in place but no resort. There is one house with a house sitter and two “watch dogs”. The house sitter came along to the dock we docked at. We explained the weather was very windy and we wanted to tie to this dock overnight. We gave him a $20 bill and petted the dogs. I called one Marmaduke as he was huge. We traveled into Nassau this morning and got some more fuel for our journey to Florida.

Vicki and I in our own whirlpool! With cocktail in hand, of course.

FRIENDS

Staniel Cay, by the pig beach
I did the blog already today but wanted to add this picture of Vicki and I. BUT I know from experience I should not add a picture to an already existing blog post. People will miss it. This is part two of today's blog. See below for the last blog entry.

LEAVING STANIEL CAY FRIDAY

We will be slowly leaving Staniel Cay tomorrow and heading towards the Exuma Land and Sea Park once again. We picked up friends Doug and Vicki here at the small airport. They were late as the Nassau airport closed because of a power outtage. Many planes hovering above the airport awaiting to land and many awaiting to take off. This morning we headed right to the Thunderball Grotto for the last time this year. We were the only ones there at first so it was awesome. Vicki and I saw and swam about 20 feet from a stingray. They are so graceful in the water. Seeing these creatures from under the water was amazing.
We are heading to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for lunch as this is the last stop until Nassau for “civilization”, ie. Lunch, buy some beer, ice, water, blue store, yellow house bakery etc. We will head north and enjoy this adventure one last time. When we say good-bye to Vicki and Doug next Thursday, we will also be heading further north to Florida. Our time in the Bahamas must come to an end. We will go home to “Spring” is what I've been told. Record high temps were recorded in Ottawa so from the warms temps here to mowing the lawn there …
We will have internet again at the Exuma Park so I will upload some pictures to our blog. Vicki and Doug brought 2 newspapers and a McLean's magazine. We will be brought up to date on the news of the outside world.

TOP TEN I WANT TO DO WHEN I GET BACK (other than hug our kids)
  1. Go to Farm Boy and load up on fruits and vegetables
  2. Have a long hot bath, no water shortage
  3. Visit friends over lunch or dinner
  4. See our brand new Great nephew in Toronto
  5. Eat Chinese food with egg rolls
  6. Make and eat homemade cookies
  7. Go for a very long walk to anywhere
  8. Missed all our boys birthdays, so I will make a giant cake!
  9. Eat ice cream or frozen yogurt (had one cone in Nassau with Ben and Sam, Feb. 2)
  10. Drive
Two very expensive “Wally” tenders came to the pig beach to see the pigs swim and it turns out that Steven Spielberg's yacht Seven Seas is anchored just a ways away. We can see it, 300ft long! He is not aboard, but charters it out for 1 million a week. This is what we heard anyway, from people that would know. One needs to google a “Wally” and you will see what these boats look like. I have never seen them before, and these were about 20ft long! Many megayachts anchored here right now because of March break time and Staniel Cay Yacht Club transforms itself to a casino on Sat. This is a 007 James Bond celebration that draws crowds of people and money. Next year if we are here we will have to plan to go as people that we've met say it is not to be missed and are disappointed we are leaving a day early.

At lunch Staniel Cay Yacht Club
I thank Matthew for buying a hand blown tequila bottle at duty free. When he left, I filled it with sand and shells. It looks so nice. The tequila was drunk before the boys left, surprise?

BY THE NUMBERS

Please see some interesting numbers below;
but here is our blog first.

Hi to all that faithfully check everyday but no blog! We are in the Yacht Club to have the $10 a day internet so we are staying for lunch! We are anchored much farther out from the yacht club and high winds and seas prevented us coming in. Our anchorage is superb though and wonderful. We have been doing a load of wash a day, hanging to dry and working away on small projects on the boat (ie: Paul had to take apart our toilet once again, yes, it is a man's job).
I did write some emails so they are ready to cut and paste and send right away as I'm afraid to lose our internet connection anytime.
We went to a beach gathering yesterday and lo and behold we met someone else we have a connection with! A small world indeed. We know Kyle and his girlfriend from Stuart's Sunset Bay Marina. He worked there and lived on his small sailboat he just bought last year. I remember him so much because he is exactly the same age as our son Matthew. He moved out of his parent's house into a sailboat. We did not know he was travelling to the Bahamas and here he was on the beach drinking a beer. His boat is a tiny little thing and it's name is MegaYacht. I remember days earlier hearing people call the MegaYacht on the VHF and commented who the heck names their boat “MegaYacht”? Good for these young people to explore now before all these commitments creep up on them.
We provisioned today as the “Mailboat” came in with all the good stuff. You know you have been gone a long time when you see iceberg lettuce and almost hug it to death. I was so happy to see that head of lettuce! I did get the good stuff, like eggs, milk, butter and tonic water for the gin!
Last night we were invited to another powercat for munchies and drinks around 6pm. So off we go, we don't turn down invites to “go out”. It is not often one sees another powercat, we are the odd ball in the anchorage. This powercat is lovely. It is always interesting to see different layouts. This couple boats for 3 months, lives in Abacos and North Carolina. They were interesting and have owned many boats over the years. We meet so many interesting people down here.
Paul rushed over to a very small sailboat in the anchorage with a fire extinguisher as there was smoke coming out of the engine room big time. Another boat also came to the rescue. It turns out that this sailor started his diesel engine for the very first time while here. He actually sailed the whole way! (yep from Florida) He never once started his engine, and when he did today, it would not go off when he wanted it to. It was then burning its own engine oil. You can imagine how much smoke. In order to stop it running they stopped the air going into the intake. .. rags and a board. Very scary! Wouldn't you test your engine BEFORE travelling anywhere?? Maybe it is just me. Always action here in the anchorage. Fun watching the tourists coming with bread to feed the fat pigs here at the pig island. The squeals are from the tourists (like Jalyn and Sam when they saw them for the first time, piglets and all).

lovely rainbow here in the Staniel Cay
The British government leased the base of George Town, Exumas to the U.S. Navy for a seaplane operation during WW II. The local economy benefited from profitable employment, but only the remnants of the seaplane ramp remain in Elizabeth Harbour today. After the war, beginning of tourism happened for all of Bahamas.
Numbers.....

54 Days in the Bahamas
12 Guests came to visit
24 Hamburgers were served (or should I say flameburgers that turned to minis)
9 Episodes of Blue Bloods  Season 1 watched (thanks Matt B. for my birthday present)
9 Cases of beer were on board
4 Cases of Kalik (Bahamian beer) were brought on board
6 Special ordered breads from the Yellow house bakery in Staniel Cay
3 Times I snorkeled the Thunderball Grotto
7 Servings of a chocolate martini!
5 Outings to a restaurant (yep, since Jan. 16)
92 Bottles of Soda Stream pop were made on board, diet pink grapefruit is the favourite
4 Times Paul had to take apart a toilet to fix (psst... so far)

2 Quality Street Chocolate tins were eaten (mostly by guests ;-)
6 Nights at marinas in Bahamas (so far), rest anchored out
47 Degrees Celcius was read one day when Ben and Sam were here
738 Miles travelled since Stuart, Florida
315 Gallons of fuel

THUNDERBALL GROTTO PICS

Jack and the fish

HIGH WINDS FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS

Hi to all our friends and family that have now returned from their “Spring Break” or “Winter Holiday”. We have had friends and family visit Hawaii, Florida and chartered a catamaran to visit Bora Bora. Think of all they would tell you if they blogged it all on blogspot.com. The four of us left the Exuma Land and Sea Park yesterday morning with heavy winds and high seas!! The catamaran was covered with salt water spray. We wanted to get here to Staniel Cay because the winds are going to just get worse as the days get on. We are safe and sound here and just snorkeled the Thunderball Grotto once again. One can never get bored with this. I took some underwater footage and some pictures. We have slow slow internet so pictures will come as a part two. We have internet this afternoon because Lyne, Jack and us are at Staniel Cay Yacht Club (sounds preppy, but really is a rustic old building that one does NOT want to overdress. We are having one meal out.... we will have conch burgers, french fries, fish or just a good old fashioned hamburger!
We did walk into Staniel Cay to the “Blue” grocery store. I bought onions and a package of bagels. We haven't had bagels for months and we were sick of cereal... psst... I am running out of cereal, oops, next guests only get All Bran Buds :-).. which are Doug and Vicki from Toronto. Anyways, Lyne and Jack had a glimpse of Staniel Cay on shore, and super super hot on shore!
Yes, I want everyone to know Lyne and I did win a game of euchre, no swearing or stomping off, a familiar card game is all we needed to have a win, but who is counting? Not me. We watched a Russell Peters comedy show on a dvd that Dave and Traci gave us. We have good evening entertainment here on board Coyaba.
We want everyone to please know that the weather will be windy and not condusive for us to go ashore in the next few days for internet and blogging. Our phones work so that is great for important stuff, but no blogging here for a good long time. High winds, everyone is “buttoning” down their hatches for the next 4 or 5 days! We are all well and have great food and drink on board. AND we are in the Bahamas so you all know a bad day in the Bahamas is so much better than a good day in Ottawa hahahaha!
ps.. I cannot seem to edit this for spelling, sorry!

The Thunderball Movie is a 1965 production filmed right here starring Sean Connery. He and the crew of the film ate at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club... maybe right at the table we will eat at. ...Jack deKleer

PICTURES FROM LAST BLOG

So many blues! Not the sad ones :-)

STILL HERE IN PARADISE

We said good-bye to our “boys”, James and Matthew and their friends after they enjoyed an evening out, dinner, casino and aquarium at Atlantis, Nassau. We so enjoyed our stay at Atlantis. This is a massive resort that has a wonderful aquarium, we stayed an extra night so our friends Lyne and Jack could see this amazing aquarium. We said good-bye to the boys and five hours later we said “Hello” to our friends. The turn-over from sheets, towel washing to cleaning the boat (4 boys, use your imagination) and getting the room ready for Lyne and Jack was amazing. I shared a taxi with another boater. She and I went to a store over the Paradise Island bridge and provisioned big time. I have produce, cheese, eggs, milk and other good stuff to last for awhile. I was so excited to get a frozen bag of chicken breasts, 6lbs for $26.00. I haven't had chicken since Florida! Now that the kids have eaten hamburgers and steaks etc, there is room in our freezer to stock up on some other freezer food. We will not be in Nassau until March 21st. So I needed to think big and hard what I had to buy. I can get produce in these Exuma settlements when their weekly boat comes in but prices are much higher.
We so enjoyed seeing our “children” and their friends but now this week is a holiday for us with our friends. It will be no work for us! We left Nassau Tuesday morning and arrived at Allen's Cay for lunch. This Cay is the one with the Iguanas. Lyne and Jack sure enjoyed seeing these creatures. It was a rougher night though as we did arrive during a rain storm (the first one that we have encountered the whole time we've been in the Bahamas during the daytime). Wednesday we travelled to Norman's Cay but too windy to anchor near the sunken airplane so anchored near a beach. Thursday morning went and did anchor by the airplane and took the dinghy to the beaches where the sand dollars are. We spent the morning “beachcombing”, collecting shells, taking pictures and oohing and aahing over the pools of blue waters. We saw the resident extra large sting ray. Paul took underwater footage and pictures of this amazing creature. It even has a “tag along” fish on his underside. We did not see this stingray jump out of the water like we did when Matt Wubs was in the water last week, but Atlantis has some magnificent stingrays there! After lunch we travelled to a new island for Paul and I, Shroud Cay. This is a nice anchorage and great swimming. A sandy bottom, so snorkeling is just for fun, nothing to see, but the BAA (Big Ass Anchor) that Paul likes the swimmers to check on it.
Lyne and Jack are enjoying a Day In the Life of Shannon and Paul, and they are having fun. This is their one week winter holiday. Nightlife is card playing! Two new games for Paul and I, Phase 10 and last night was Wizard. Good thing I am a good sport, and do not throw cards on the table and stomp off. I did have some swear words to entertain everyone :-) I was the biggest loser both nights but no worries, I hear we might play euchre tonight and I am good at that game!
We arrived at the Exuma Land and Sea Park this morning and will snorkel at slack tide, which is 2:45pm this afternoon. We sure look forward to that. I will update this blog with a part 2 with pictures. We only have so many MB for this 24 hours of internet and there are others to use it. So stay tuned,
