Please see some interesting numbers below;
but here is our blog first.
Hi to all that faithfully check
everyday but no blog! We are in the Yacht Club to have the $10 a day
internet so we are staying for lunch! We are anchored much farther
out from the yacht club and high winds and seas prevented us coming
in. Our anchorage is superb though and wonderful. We have been doing
a load of wash a day, hanging to dry and working away on small
projects on the boat (ie: Paul had to take apart our toilet once
again, yes, it is a man's job).
I did write some emails so they are
ready to cut and paste and send right away as I'm afraid to lose our
internet connection anytime.
We went to a beach gathering yesterday
and lo and behold we met someone else we have a connection with! A
small world indeed. We know Kyle and his girlfriend from Stuart's
Sunset Bay Marina. He worked there and lived on his small sailboat he
just bought last year. I remember him so much because he is exactly
the same age as our son Matthew. He moved out of his parent's house
into a sailboat. We did not know he was travelling to the Bahamas and
here he was on the beach drinking a beer. His boat is a tiny little
thing and it's name is MegaYacht. I remember days earlier hearing
people call the MegaYacht on the VHF and commented who the heck names
their boat “MegaYacht”? Good for these young people to explore
now before all these commitments creep up on them.
We provisioned today as the “Mailboat”
came in with all the good stuff. You know you have been gone a long
time when you see iceberg lettuce and almost hug it to death. I was
so happy to see that head of lettuce! I did get the good stuff, like
eggs, milk, butter and tonic water for the gin!
Last night we were invited to another
powercat for munchies and drinks around 6pm. So off we go, we don't
turn down invites to “go out”. It is not often one sees another
powercat, we are the odd ball in the anchorage. This powercat is
lovely. It is always interesting to see different layouts. This
couple boats for 3 months, lives in Abacos and North Carolina. They
were interesting and have owned many boats over the years. We meet so many interesting people down
here.
Paul rushed over to a very small
sailboat in the anchorage with a fire extinguisher as there was smoke
coming out of the engine room big time. Another boat also came to the
rescue. It turns out that this sailor started his diesel engine for
the very first time while here. He actually sailed the whole way!
(yep from Florida) He never once started his engine, and when he did
today, it would not go off when he wanted it to. It was then burning
its own engine oil. You can imagine how much smoke. In order to stop
it running they stopped the air going into the intake. .. rags and a
board. Very scary! Wouldn't you test your engine BEFORE travelling
anywhere?? Maybe it is just me. Always action here in the anchorage.
Fun watching the tourists coming with bread to feed the fat pigs here
at the pig island. The squeals are from the tourists (like Jalyn and
Sam when they saw them for the first time, piglets and all).
The British government leased the
base of George Town, Exumas to the U.S. Navy for a seaplane operation
during WW II. The local economy benefited from profitable employment,
but only the remnants of the seaplane ramp remain in Elizabeth
Harbour today. After the war, beginning of tourism happened for all
of Bahamas.
